What fragrances celebrities wear!
The red carpet is an elegant chaos of fragrances; sillages trail left and right like taunting ghosts, beckoning you to follow. It’s a harmonious clash of olfactory ecstasy, so much that your nose succumbs to fatigue until a particularly unique scent draws you back into the fray.
The classic question is, “What are you wearing?” But this inquiry is rarely answered with a fragrance. It’s always the dress designer, the suit, the shoes—never the products that can’t be captured on film.
It’s only reasonable to take beauty tips from our favorite A-listers. With insider knowledge and resources exceeding our own, they know what to wear and how to wear it. That’s why we’ve scoured the archives for interviews and social media posts revealing iconic celebrities’ favorite scents—the ones that they aren’t paid to wear—for you to get a whiff of inspiration.
Priyanka Chopra
Bollywood star, philanthropist, Nick Jonas’s new wife, and one of Forbes’s World’s 100 Most Powerful Women two years in the running, Priyanka Chopra has clearly made the right life choices! So how about her choice in fragrance?
Chopra’s preferred scent (as revealed by InStyle) is Trussardi Donna. The gently seductive eau de parfum first brushes against the senses with vibrant freshness of water fruit and yuzu, while the middle notes hold floaty white flowers and orange blossoms, along with the delicate sophistication of water lily and jasmine tea. It’s all wrapped up with a deep woody base—the whisper of a woman who knows what’s what.
Victoria Beckham
Next up is Posh Spice herself, businesswoman and fashion designer Victoria Beckham. We know, we know, we’re all a bit sore that she didn’t participate in the Spice Girls’ 2019 reunion tour—but we still trust in her taste.
Introduced on her Instagram story, Victoria touted the scent Room Service from niche fragrance house Vilhelm Parfumerie, a brand with an origin tale as fantastically romantic as its scents. This product in particular features a colorful bouquet of violet, pink orchid, and green bamboo. It’s topped with refreshing mandarin and blackberry, while a warm sandalwood base brings it all to a smooth and sensual finish.
Emilia Clarke
Let’s be honest here: who doesn’t want to smell like the mother of dragons? Though her legendary run on HBO’s Game of Thrones has come to an end, we all still want mom’s approval—and we know she isn’t her character, but let’s get real, Emilia is the real Khaleesi in our hearts.
So what does the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals, Breaker of Chains, etc. smell like in real life? Well, right now, probably The Only One from Dolce & Gabbana, seeing as she’s now the face of the fragrance. But before that, her recommended scent was Le Labo Santal 33.
The popular perfume—advertised as gender-neutral, though gendered fragrances are a misconception to begin with—features at its core a warm, woody scent, spiced up with a kick of musky leather and conversely brightened by floral top notes. It brings to mind images of open air and crackling firelight beneath the starry skies of the western desert. Sounds just about right for Daenerys.
Troye Sivan
How about we get a gentleman in here? Singer, actor, Youtuber, and international darling Troye Sivan told GQ all about his life essentials. One such product was his favorite eau de toilette: Aesop’s Marrakech.
Inspired by the eponymous city, the intense fragrance is just as unique as Morocco itself. Woody notes bring to mind the nation’s warm hospitality, while floral notes and hints of spice give it a bright kick of color. It’s a combination of a bright, bustling market, desert winds, and a warm plate of traditional homemade food.
Jing Lusi
British-Chinese actress Jing Lusi is probably most well known now as one member of the cast of stunners featured in 2018 blockbuster Crazy Rich Asians. With such an unmatched assemblage of gorgeous and talented stars, it’s no wonder we all want to know their routines!
In regards to fragrance, Lusi told Byrdie that she swears by a nostalgic scent that she always seems to come back to: Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue. The breezy aroma brings out the sparkling feeling of a fruity, floral summer, with fresh breaths of lime and cedar. In her terms, it reminds her of university—sounds like a pretty good college experience!
Meghan Markle
Here’s your fun fact for the day: Meghan Markle ran a lifestyle blog. Key word here being “ran.” The blog has been defunct for some time now, but before it was wiped from the web, the actress-come-duchess revealed style tips that were archived by the fans with the most foresight.
On her blog, titled The Tig, Markle named one of her signature scents as Jo Malone’s Wild Bluebell. This delicate cologne portrays the breath of a dewy valley; gentle bluebells, lilies, and sweet briar, plus a delectable twist of ripe persimmon.
Karen Elson described the scent on Jo Malone’s website as smelling “like the English countryside, sweet and gorgeous.” Now isn’t that a poetic twist of fate?
Liam Payne
Having gone solo during One Direction’s indefinite hiatus, it’s Liam’s time to share with the world his own talents—and his personal favorites. One product he’s faithful to is an eau de toilette he says is his girlfriend’s favorite, Chanel’s Platinum Egoiste.
Platinum Egoiste was designed to portray the French expression, “qui a de la platine” (literally, he “who has platinum”). The phrase is used to describe a brilliant, eloquent man, imagery that the fragrance channels with a balance of freshness and warmth.
Aromatic lavender, rosemary, and petitgrain are at the head of the scent, while at its heart is a blossom of sage and geranium. The woody amber base notes leave a lingering warmth, leaving whoever catches the scent leaning in for more.
Lucy Hale
Known for hit series Pretty Little Liars, Lucy Hale is just as creatively stylish as her character. Not only is she an actress and musician, but Lucy has also revealed that she’s a bit of a beauty guru.
On her list of beauty essentials was a certain chic perfume, Le Labo Gaiac 10. Though not as prevalent as the aforementioned Santal 33, the Tokyo-inspired scent is still well-loved. The fragrance’s namesake is its heady note of guaiac wood, rounded out with musk, cedar, and frankincense. Though it sounds like it’d primarily be a warm, woody scent, it’s more frequently described as something uniquely clean; a satiny texture like fabric softener, a breath full of subtly sweet incense.
There is one downside to Hale’s favorite scent: it’s one of Le Labo’s city-exclusives, only available in Tokyo (save for during their yearly City Exclusive Event). To be honest, that just makes it all the more desirable! We’d expect nothing less from Aria Montgomery.
