A German fashion brand, also known as simply Boss, Hugo Boss was founded in Metzingen, Germany, in 1924. The company was named after Hugo Boss, the brand’s creator who was born and died living his entire life in Metzingen. The company’s headquarters are still based in the town in which Hugo lived.
When he first started his brand, Hugo produced a general-purpose clothing line. Hugo was known to be loyal to the ideology of the Nazi German party. When the Nazi Party began its rise in 1930, the german military tapped Hugo’s brand to produce the uniforms for the Nazi party.
After that, the brand would supply uniforms for other such organizations, including the National Socialism Party. It wasn’t until after the events of World War II that the brand began to make and sell men’s suits.
Since then, Hugo Boss has segued into a world-renowned brand that has branched out into offering women’s and children’s clothing as well. In 1985, the company added perfumes to its already famous brand.
Hugo Boss Himself
Born in 1885, Hugo Ferdinand Boss came by clothing production through his parents. They owned a lingerie shop in Hugo’s hometown of Metzingen, which he proceeded to take over and operate in 1908. With his organically gained experience, by way of the family business, and his time apprenticing as a merchant, he had all the tools he needed to create and become successful at his own brand.
Hugo founded his clothing company in 1923, which he was able to segue over into a factory in only a year later. When first started, the Boss brand we know of today was a purveyor of simple clothing items—such as shirts, jackets, raincoats, and sportswear items.
When Hugo started his brand, it was a difficult time in the German economy, and as a result, Hugo ended up in bankruptcy. Even so, he reached an amicable agreement with his creditors, and he was able to keep his business. The creditors left him with only six sewing machines, but in 1931 he started to build his business back up from scratch.
In that same year, after joining the Nazi Party, Hugo’s brand began producing uniforms for the Nazis. The demand for the uniforms was high, and as a result, his sales allowed his business to start flourishing.
Unfortunately, Hugo’s membership in both the Nazi Party and the National Socialism Party would not end well, and in 1946 Hugo Boss had to face the music—as it were. A court convicted him of actively supporting the National Socialism Party, and he was ordered to pay a massive penalty. He was also stripped of his voting rights and forbidden from running a business of his own ever again. Two years later, Hugo Boss died.
The Brand Today
In today’s modern world, the company now features two core brands: Hugo and Boss. Each brand has its unique style and the type of clientele that they each appeal to. As the brand grew, so did the arenas into which it would spread. Hugo Boss was officially granted their first license for fragrance in 1985—the same year it launched its very first perfume—Boss Number One. As their collection of colognes for men grew, in 1997, they added a fragrance to their line for women—Hugo for Women. Today, Hugo Boss has a wide variety of fragrances in its massive lineup. We offer some of the more popular ones here at Scentbox.
